Task 1: Becoming an Effective Values-Based Leader

A.Character Strengths
1. Leveraging Fairness in Board Leadership
Stepping into the role of Board President at the Chicago Gay
Men's Chorus, I was confronted with two significant challenges:
motivating community members to join the board and
encouraging existing board members to take on projects and
leadership roles. To tackle these, I adopted a strategy centered
around fairness, treating everyone equally and recognizing their
unique skills.

Recognizing the importance of individual strengths and passions, I
conducted one-on-one meetings with each board member. This
allowed me to align their interests and skills with specific projects,
transforming their involvement from mere task completion to
meaningful and fulfilling work.

When it came to filling positions on the executive committee, I
was determined to commit to a transparent and inclusive
selection process. I ensured that everyone felt valued and heard

by openly sharing the requirements and criteria and providing a

The choice for the executive committee members was based on
their ability to contribute to our shared objectives, not on
personal biases. This fair approach not only built trust in the
selection process but also reinforced our collective commitment to
inclusivity and respect for everyone's role.

Through a steadfast commitment to fairness, I was able to foster
a more engaged and proactive board. This, in turn, bolstered our
organization's governance and propelled our mission to support
the LGBTQIA+ community, leaving us all with a sense of hope
and optimism for the future.

a. Fairness in Practice: Guiding Team Decisions
In my new capacity as the customer service manager, I
prioritize fairness by establishing a level playing field for all
team members. When selecting a team lead, the process will
be clear-cut and merit-based, allowing every member a fair
shot based on their performance and potential. This method
supports impartiality and aligns with our company's
commitment to integrity and respect.

Equity will also be at the heart of daily interactions with the
team. I value each member's contributions equally, ensuring
our discussions and decisions are free from bias and that all
voices are heard. Such a balanced approach is essential for
nurturing a trustful and inclusive team environment.

Furthermore, when it comes to our customers, I will ensure
that every interaction with them is guided by fairness. Each
customer will be treated equally, reflecting the company's
values, and upholding our standard for exceptional service. By
embedding fairness into our team's ethos, I anticipate
improved morale and a more substantial, loyal customer base.
