Essay marking criteria
When you get your essays back, you will get feedback on 5 areas.
Content
You will be assessed on whether you have shown relevant knowledge.
Focus on particular areas in this topic.
Have you read a number of relevant texts? Look at academic sources, books and
journal articles and things uploaded on the Moodle site.
Generally things on Google Scholar is reliable.
Use reputable news outlet where they are subject to some checks and balances.
Do not use sources like Daily Mail and tabloid news as they can be very biased.
Structure
Structure is very important in academic essays.
Show you have considered how you have thought about how you would present
and piece together the information.
Make a plan.
Whoever is marking your essays will be looking at whether you have really done
your reading.
Draw your argument in a logical way and then provide a conclusion. You need to
logically demonstrate your argument.
The conclusion needs to draw together the points that you have made. Don’t
include new points! Avoid a scrappy conclusion. This is where you reiterate your
argument!
Put the essay aside for 24 hours and then come back to it later with a fresher
mind.
The introduction should clearly outline what you are going to say in the essay.
Every essay you write in this degree should have an argument.
