Have there been any recent changes to her medical history?
Annabelle has not had any new or recent diagnoses in the last
couple of years. She has been fairly stable, other than the apraxia
of speech diagnosis that was given to her by her speech therapist
in the last year or so.

Have you noticed any problems with Annabelle’s hearing?
Annabelle doesn’t have any hearing difficulties that we are aware
of. We did have her hearing tested just to rule out any issues with
speech. We were able to rule out any moderate to severe hearing
difficulties, but she hasn’t ever cooperated in the booth setting. So,
we are unable to determine if she has any mild hearing loss. But
from our parent point of view, we don’t think she has any
difficulties at all.

Does Annabelle respond differently to receiving speech therapy in
a clinic versus receiving speech therapy while doing therapeutic
riding?
I feel like Annabelle does respond differently to clinic-based
therapy and this horseback riding therapy just because it’s a
different type of motivating therapy. She is very sensory oriented
and sensory seeking, so the idea of riding a horse is very
motivating to her. Both therapies are motivating, it’s just different
things. Her private speech therapy is more tactile motivation
whereas this is more sensory-driven motivation.

What progress have you seen with Annabelle since starting speech
therapy services?
Annabelle has made huge progress in speech therapy in the past
year, especially. She is making more vocalizations, especially in
regards to the first consonant sounds of most words. When she
first started speech therapy, everything was the sound ‘buh’ with
the lip over. It was like, “buh buh” for everything. Any noun was
“buh buh.” And so now, she is really starting to make the
approximate consonant sounds for most nouns. And she is using
her device very proficiently, using three- to four-word phrases for
things that are highly motivating for her. And we just couldn't be
happier with her progress. Although it be slow, she is making huge
gains.
