(a) Hermeneutics and truth

Hermeneutics offers a view of truth that is very different from the idea that truth is
fixed, objective, and independent of human beings. According to hermeneutics, truth
is not something that exists outside of people waiting to be discovered in a final and
absolute form. Instead, truth emerges through human understanding and
interpretation. What we take to be true is shaped by our experiences, our language,
our culture, and the communities to which we belong. This means that truth is always
connected to context and meaning rather than being purely factual or scientific
(Higgs & Letseka, 2022).

Hermeneutics does not reject science or scientific truth, but it argues that scientific
truth alone is not enough to make life meaningful. Human beings also need truth that
speaks to values, traditions, beliefs, and shared ways of living. Meaningful truth
develops through dialogue, openness, and interpretation rather than through rigid
rules or authoritarian claims about what is right or wrong. In this way, hermeneutics
encourages openness and shared understanding instead of suppression and
domination (Higgs & Letseka, 2022).

Thinkers such as Gadamer emphasised that art, tradition, and community play an
important role in guiding human beings towards truth. Truth is therefore not
something owned by individuals, but something that develops within communities
through language and symbols. Hermeneutics also highlights that all human
interaction relies on symbols, such as language, signs, and cultural practices, and
these symbols only have meaning because they are shared and interpreted within a
community.

In this sense, hermeneutics views truth as something that grows through
interpretation and understanding rather than something that can be fully captured by
facts alone. Truth becomes a lived experience that helps people make sense of their
world and their place within it (Higgs & Letseka, 2022).
