LAB 8 NOTEBOOK
Experiment 8 – The Excretory System
Human Anatomy and Physiology II
Portage Learning, Geneva College

, NOTEBOOK ENTRY FOR:
Experiment 8 – The Excretory System
TITLE: The Excretory System
NOTES:

The Urinary system

a) Principal means of waste elimination other are digestive
b) Come from metabolism. If not removed can become toxic in body
c) Kidney main organs that separate metabolic waste from blood
d) Has 6 total organs: 2 kidneys, 2 ureters, bladder, urethra

Reproductive and urinary = closely related = urogenital system

The Kidneys

Filters our blood plasma by glomerulus capillaries; helps to regulate blood volume by conserving /
eliminating fluid; Regulates blood pressure by producing erythropoietin/ regulates to osmolarity of our
blood.

Weighs 150 grams, 11 cm long, 6 wide, 3 cm thick

Lateral surface is convex, medial is concave (hilum); blood tissue enters and exits

Interior glandular tissue called renal tissue: 2 zones – the cortex and medulla; cortex dips down into
the sinus region of the kidney (renal column extensions of cortex) renal pyramids rest in the minor
palace: each pyramid rests in its own minor calyx. Minor calyx drains everything in the period, blend
with major calyx, enter the renal pelvis- kidney function is called a nephron. 2 parts renal corpuscle
(main filter of body) / system (converts it’s to urine). (major/minor calyx).

Urine can provide information about the body (urinalysis- test)

Color of urine depends on the state of the bodies hydration – darker (dehydration) – clear (hydrated)

Urochrome (due to hemoglobin break down)

Clarity of urine tells us if there’s infection, cloudy urine can mean bacteria in the body

Puss in the urine- pyuria

Blood in the urine hematuria- kidney stones, trauma

Odor of urine is distinctive odor in a fresh sample- in old sample (uria) bacteria are able to multiply –
stronger odor – more pungent

Diet can effect: example: asparagus causes it to smell. Diabetics have sweet smell due to acetone.
Rotten smell means a UTI - multiplication of bacteria -very pungent

PH of 6.0= slightly acidic 8.2 considered normal range as well
