, NOTEBOOK ENTRY FOR:

Experiment #5 – Circulatory System – Blood Flow Tracing

TITLE: Circulatory System – Blood flow tracing

NOTES:

Blood follows a general mapping system: from heart blood flows to arteries,
capillaries, back to heart by veins.
Arteries- efferent blood vessel of circulatory system; always carry blood away
from heart =oxygenated blood.
*Pulmonary artery is exception =deoxygenated blood.

Flows from large to small

Arteries
Conducting; large; exit from heart; aorta and pulmonary trunk; expand when
heart beats to withstand pressure from blood surges; contains elastic tissue
in order to transport. As arteries age y stiffen= artery plasticity. Increase in
pressure can cause aneurysm- weakening of blood vessel or artery.

Distributing artery: medium or muscular; direct branches from conducting
arteries; have a thick muscular wall- up to 40 layers of muscle; makes up
75% of wall itself has elastic tissue; examples: brachial artery

Resistance arteries- numerous- too many to name

Atioles: connect arterial system to capillary system

Capillaries exchange vessels; have thin walls; exchanges oxygen, glucose
providing body with nutrients; connect smallest arteries to smallest veins

Veins are afferent blood vessels: bring blood back to heart; carry
deoxygenated blood; capacity to hold large amongst of blood; stretch easier
at rest than arteries; 11% of blood is found in arteries, 54% in veins

Veins have lower blood pressure = farther away from heart

Veins = small vein to large vein

Posterior capillary vein= medium veins: drain blood from specific areas in
body=radial=: contains valves; does not have strength to pump blood back
