General Marking Guidance
• All candidates must receive the same treatment. Examiners must mark the
first candidate in exactly the same way as they mark the last.
• Mark schemes should be applied positively. Candidates must be rewarded
for what they have shown they can do rather than penalised for omissions.
• Examiners should mark according to the mark scheme not according to their
perception of where the grade boundaries may lie.
• There is no ceiling on achievement. All marks on the mark scheme should be
used appropriately.
• All the marks on the mark scheme are designed to be awarded. Examiners
should always award full marks if deserved, i.e. if the answer matches the
mark scheme. Examiners should also be prepared to award zero marks if the
candidate’s response is not worthy of credit according to the mark scheme.
• Where some judgement is required, mark schemes will provide the principles
by which marks will be awarded and exemplification may be limited.
• When examiners are in doubt regarding the application of the mark scheme
to a candidate’s response, the team leader must be consulted.
• Crossed out work should be marked UNLESS the candidate has replaced it
with an alternative response.

Question 1
Question 1(a): Identify the Part Responsible for Photosynthesis
Typical Pattern:
• Topic Covered: Photosynthesis, plant cell structures, cell biology.
• Type of Question: Direct identification of a plant cell organelle involved in a
specific function (photosynthesis).
• Theoretical Background: Chloroplasts are the organelles in plant cells
responsible for photosynthesis. They contain the pigment chlorophyll, which
absorbs sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and
oxygen during photosynthesis. This question tests basic knowledge of plant
cell structures and their functions.
Answer and Explanation:
• Answer: B: Chloroplast. Chloroplasts are responsible for photosynthesis in
plant cells. They contain chlorophyll, which captures light energy necessary
for this process.
• Justification: This question assesses the candidate's knowledge of the basic
functions of different organelles in plant cells. Chloroplasts are specifically
involved in the process of photosynthesis, making them the correct answer.
The other options are not involved in photosynthesis:
• A: Cell wall provides structure and protection but does not participate
in photosynthesis.
• C: Nucleus controls cell activities but is not involved in
photosynthesis.
• D: Vacuole stores water and nutrients but does not participate in
photosynthesis.
Mark Scheme:
• [1 mark]: Correct identification of the chloroplast as the part responsible for
photosynthesis.
