Advanced Professional Nurse as Advocate
Per the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) advanced-level Domain 3
competencies, two of the competencies that will guide the advanced professional nurse to improve
population health are managing population health and considering the socioeconomic impact of
the delivery of health. Managing population health can guide us in assessing the types of chronic
diseases in our community and finding ways to prevent high mortality levels due to insufficient
care for those diseases. Considering socioeconomic impact can guide us in finding resources for
accessible healthcare. An example of how managing health can help us improve population health
is by assessing the efficacy of a system’s capability to serve a target sub- population’s healthcare
need (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2021). When working as advanced
professional nurses in a hospital, we can help the hospital by researching and assessing if the care
provided by the hospital meets all the needs of the population in that specific community. If that
is not the case, we can provide the hospital with ideas of what is needed and methods to meet the
healthcare needs of that population. An example of considering the socioeconomic impact of the
delivery of health is analyzing the cost-benefits of selected population-based interventions
(American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2021), which means finding resources that are
cost-efficient and still able to improve population health.

The first category in the professional assessment is communication. Communication is
exchanging thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs between patients and
