Poem: The Eagle – Alfred, Lord Tennyson



1.1) There are two poetic devices in line one – a sound device and a figure of

speech. Identify both of them and discuss their effect on the meaning of the line.

Alliteration is the repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of words. In
this line, the repeated ‘c’ sound in “clasps,” “crag,” and “crooked” is an example of
alliteration. According to the ENG2613 Study Guide, repetition of sounds helps to create
rhythm and meaning in a poem. The hard ‘c’ sound creates a sharp and firm rhythm,
which reflects the eagle’s strength and tight grip on the rock (ENG2613, Unit 2).



Personification is used when human qualities are given to non-human objects or
animals. The phrase “crooked hands” gives the eagle human-like hands instead of
claws. This makes the eagle seem powerful, deliberate, and in control, as if it is
choosing to hold onto the rock. Together, these devices strengthen the image of the
