Fundamentals Patient Care: Charles Peterson


PURPOSE:
The following information is to be used in guiding your preparation and participation in the scenario for this course.
This document will provide applicable course outcomes in preparation for your simulation. Additional information
about Simulation-Based Experiences (SBEs), including supporting webinars available, completing an evaluation after
simulation, etc., is located on the Clinical Learning Information for Students page within the course shell

SCENARIO OVERVIEW:
Charles Peterson (pronouns: he/him/his) is a patient admitted for a fall and suspected closed head injury. Mr.
Peterson has a history of Parkinson’s Disease and reports losing his balance while walking. He states he hit his head on
the floor and denies loss of consciousness. He is a retired farmer and lives with his wife on the family farm. His wife
reports changes in Charles’ ability to complete activities of daily living. The scenario starts as the patient arrives to the
unit from the Emergency Department.


STUDENT ROLES DURING SIMULATION:

LEARNER OBJECTIVES:
1. Perform a comprehensive health history and physical assessment on older adult patients. (CO1,2, and 4)
2. Utilize clinical reasoning skills when analyzing findings and prioritizing patient care. (CO1,2, and 4)
3. Construct a plan of care based on assessment findings and nursing diagnoses. (CO1,2, and 4)
4. Document assessment findings and patient care in SBAR format. (CO1,2, and 4)


DUE DATE:
The standardized simulation will be conducted during Weeks 3 - 8 to ensure students are prepared to meet the
objectives.



SIMULATION TIMING:
• Pre-brief: 30 minutes
• Run Time: 30 minutes
• Debrief: 60 minutes
