, Introduction
➢Blood is the only fluid tissue in the body
➢It is a specialized type of connective tissue in which formed
elements are suspended in non living fluid matrix called plasma.
➢Connective tissue in liquid form and of mesoderma origin
2
, Introduction
➢The total blood volume makes up about 6-8 percent
of the body’s weight.
➢Accordingly, a 70-kilogram person will have about
5 litres of blood.
3
, Characteristics of Blood
➢Colour:
✓Scarlet red – when oxygenated
✓Dark red – when deoxygenated
➢Viscosity: 4 – 5 times more viscous than water
➢pH: 7.35 – 7.45
➢Volume:
✓5 – 6 L in males
✓4 – 5 L in females
✓About 6-8% of total body weight
➢Temperature: Slightly higher than body temperature
