Albania

Introduction

I chose to highlight the culture of Albania for my cultural competency paper. I have a

friend very dear to me who moved here at 18 years old in search of a better life. I’ve grown to

learn more than I could’ve ever imagined about her part of the world through her. As a

multiracial woman in America, I thought I knew a fair amount about how cultures vary, but there

will still be so much more to learn. With one look, one would perceive her as a Caucasian

American; with her voice, many perceive her as Russian; who would’ve thought that she is, in

fact, Albanian.

Background

Albania is in the southeastern part of Europe and borders Montenegro, North Macedonia,

and Greece. Albanians are divided into two cultural groups of the north and south, known as

Ghegs and Tosks, and their language differs significantly in dialect. The language of Albania is

called Shqip, which translates directly to “Albanian” in English. Albanians live by an honor code

that guides their moral compass, the Kanun. It consists of four pillars: honor, hospitality, proper

conduct, and kin loyalty. The Kanun compels Albanians to keep their promises, make agreements

to completion, and see to their obligations and responsibilities in life (Kiprop, 2018).

What are the prevalent healthcare beliefs and needs of this culture?

According to an article titled “The hardships of a broken healthcare system,” Albanians

have a constitutional right to have adequate health insurance. They have a universal health care

model that is made possible through mandatory, voluntary, and supplemented contributions

(Musabelliu, 2019). Albania has a mostly public healthcare system that is organized into three

levels: the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. All levels of which are offered through about
