, QUESTION 1
1.1 Discuss the three basic and two advanced communication skills in
community

work.
Within community work there are 3 basic communication skills that can assist the
community worker or aid within the field. They are attending, listening and basic
empathy. These all fall under the realm of conscious communication.

Attending: here the caseworker is needed to be attentive at all the meetings and
consequent gatherings required to make change. They should also be attentive, have
good listening skills and pay attention to the surroundings and feelings of those within
the community and the points that have been brought up. This refers to the ability to
express ideas and information clearly and concisely. In community work, verbal
communication is essential for explaining concepts, sharing information, and educating
community members about sensitive issues like teenage pregnancy or HIV.

Listening: Here we require good listening skills. The case worker should be able to
listen attentively to what has been raised by the group and what points of action need to
be taken for change to be brought about. Special attention should be given to cues that
individuals may give that can assist in the change of the group and the problem being
solved. Active listening involves giving full attention to the speaker, demonstrating
interest, and understanding their message. It’s important in community work to ensure
that community members feel heard, respected, and valued. It also helps to grasp the
root issues and emotions behind what is being said.

Basic empathy: a certain level of care and understanding should be upheld by the case
worker to understand the severity of the issue at hand and to be able to manage the
issues being raised with a level of respect and dignity to those affected. Non-verbal
cues such as body language, facial expressions, and eye contact also play a crucial role
in communication. In community settings, using appropriate non-verbal
communication can build rapport, show empathy, and create trust with community
members who may feel uncomfortable discussing sensitive topics.

Advanced communication skills operate at a deeper, unconscious level. Key advanced
communication skills include immediacy, exploring distortions or discrepancies, and
advanced empathy. These skills help bring awareness to unexpressed or unsymbolized
