formation or fusion of gametes occurs.

The offspring produced are:

● Genetically identical to the parent
● Known as clones

2. General Characteristics of Asexual Reproduction
● Involves a single parent
● No fertilization
● Rapid process
● Produces large number of offspring quickly
● Offspring show little or no variation
● Common in unicellular organisms and some plants

3. Modes of Asexual Reproduction

A. FISSION
Definition

Fission is the division of a single-celled organism into two or more identical daughter cells.

1. Binary Fission

The parent organism divides into two identical daughter cells.

Process:

, ● Nucleus divides first (karyokinesis)
● Cytoplasm divides next (cytokinesis)

Types of Binary Fission:

Type Plane of Division Example

Irregular Any plane Amoeba

Longitudinal Along the cell’s Euglena
vertical axis

Transverse Across width Paramecium

Characteristics:

● Very fast
● Occurs under favorable conditions

2. Multiple Fission

The nucleus divides repeatedly to form many nuclei, followed by cytoplasmic division.

Example:

● Plasmodium

Occurs when:

● Conditions are unfavorable
● Organism forms a cyst

B. BUDDING
Definition

Budding is a mode where a small outgrowth (bud) develops on the parent body and later
