Source B Adapted from a secret US government report presented to the American
President on 5 April 1954. At this time the French were fighting Vietnamese
Communists in the battle of Dien Bien Phu.
It is essential for American security that southeast Asia does not become
Communist. This may happen next year unless we do something, regardless
of what happens at Dien Bien Phu.
We object to China spreading Communism. However, if we use military force
then our allies might protest. It will also involve high costs, loss of life, and risk 5
war with China.
Nevertheless, we must plan for some form of military action and strengthen our
friendship with countries in southeast Asia and nearby allies such as Australia.
Source C An Australian cartoon published in a popular Roman Catholic Church magazine
in July 1954. The title was, ‘Next meal, please!’ Australia was an ally of America.
The snake represents Communism.
