Taxonomy

the area of biological sciences devoted to the identification, naming, and
classification of living things according to apparent common characteristics

Binomial nomenclature

System of naming organisms in which each organism is indicated by two words:
the genus (capitalized) and species (lowercase) names, both written in italics or
underlined. For example, the common horse is Equus caballus.

Taxon

A taxonomic category or group, such as a phylum, order, family, genus, or
species. Taxa indicates more than one taxon. Most taxonomic names are
capitalized (e.g. Phylum Porifera, not "porifera").

,Domain

Any of three primary divisions of living systems, consisting of the eukaryotes,
bacteria, and archaea, that rank above a kingdom in taxonomic systems that are
based on similarities of DNA sequences.

Kingdom

The highest taxonomic classification into which organisms are grouped, based on
fundamental similarities and common ancestry. The Linnaean system designates
five such classifications: animals, plants, fungi, prokaryotes, and protists.

Phylum

One of the major divisions of the kingdoms of living things; the secondlargest
standard unit of biological classification. Arthropoda, Chordata, and Mollusca
are each phyla (plural form of "phylum") of animals.

Class

The classification beneath a phylum and above an order. Mammalia, Reptilia, and
Insecta are examples of classes in the animal kingdom.

Order

A taxonomic category of organisms ranking above a family and below a class.
Rodentia is an order of mammals which contains over 2,000 species.

,Family

A taxonomic category of organisms ranking above a genus and below an order.
Animal families end in the letters "-idae," such as in Felidae, the cat family.

Genus

A taxonomic category ranking below a family and above a species and generally
consisting of a group of species exhibiting similar characteristics.
The genus of a species is always capitalized and underlined or in italics.

Species

Subdivision of biological classification composed of related organisms that share
common characteristics and can interbreed. Note the species name is lowercase
and is always paired with its genus.
It is also underlined or in italics.

How should an organism's genus be written?

Capitalized and italicized (or underlined)

How should an organism's species name be written?

First word capitalized, second word lowercase. Both should be italicized and
underlined.

, order of taxonomy

Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species

flagellated protozoans

single, unwalled cells with one or more flagella
Example: Euglena
