Inlays/Onlays
Inlays:

• Indicated for premolars or molars with minimal caries or previous restoration that
need a mesioocclusal or disto- occlusal restoration
• It offers a superior material and margins that will not deteriorate with time




Technique:

o A flat ended bur is used to create the outline on the occlusal surface - the
isthmus follows the central groove on the occlusal surface ensuring there are
no under cuts
o The base should have an even depth of 1.5mm
o A proximal box is created breaking the contact point

, o The isthmus and box are then beveled




Onlays:

• Generally considered better than inlays in areas of occlusal load in protecting the
tooth from stress
• Indicated in deteriorating teeth with intact buccal and lingual cusps, MOD
restorations with wide isthmuses endodontically treated posterior teeth with sound
buccal and lingual tooth structure
