UNIT 2 - COMPUTER SYSTEMS - P 1 - HARDWA
COMPONENTS
Sophie Turvill
, CPU - CENTRAL PROCESSING
UNIT
The CPU is the most important part of a computer system as it is
the ’brains’ of the computer.
The CPU executes the sequence of instructions of a computer
program.
The clock rate (speed) is measured in GHz (gigahertz) or Hz
(hertz). One GHz is a billion cycles per second.
There are two different main manufacturers of CPU’s which are
Intel and AMD (Advanced Micro Devices)
The cost of a CPU depends on the quality and performance of it.
The better the CPU the higher the cost will be.
The CPU communicates through the FSB (Front Side Bus) which is
the main link between the CPU and the computer.
Each CPU can have a different number of cores; 2 Core is Dual, 4
Core is Quad and 8 Core is Octa
