Zinc Oxide Eugenol
Advantages:

• Anti-inflammatory properties
• Cheap

Disadvantages:

• Weakest cement
• Does not bond to tooth tissue
• Direct contact with pulp can cause necrosis

Indications:

• Temporary Restorations
• Base
• Temporary luting of restorations
• Endodontic sealer
• Impression material

Contraindications:

• Temporary restorations in non-retentive cavities
• Direct placement on exposed pulp
• Luting agent unde resin-containing materials

Examples:

• Temp Bond (Kerr) - temporary crowns and bridges
• IRM (Dentsply) - IRM Intermediate Restorative material is designed for restorations
intended to remain in place for up to one year. Indications - Emergency placement

, prior to complete treatment, endo access openings, pedo teeth that will soon exfoliate,
and caries management programs


Zinc Phosphate
Advantages:

• Acceptable mechanical properties
• Cheap
• Good long term stability

Disadvantages:

• Acidic when setting - can cause post-cementation sensitivity
• Soluble
• No molecular adhesion - friction only

Indications:

• Definitive cementation of inlays, metal crowns and bridges and orthodontic bands
• As a base

Contraindications:

• Definitive cemention of ceramic crowns and bridges
• Base when in close proximity to the pulp


Zinc Polycarboxylate
Advantages:

• Bonds to tooth
• Acceptable mechanical properties
• Cheap

Disadvantages

• Difficult to mix
• Soluble in mouth
• Opaque

Indications:

• Temporary Restorations in non-retentive cavities or with an inflammed pulp
• Bases
• Definitive luting of metal/metal ceramic crowns and orthodontic browns
