Class Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Forces

In solids it ranges from v.small to very large

Ions, atoms or molecules are bound together via attractive forces e.g
intermolecular forces, metallic bonding, covalent bonding, ionic
interactions

Molecular Solids

Molecules of raw materials are bound by intermolecular forces

These forces can be dispersion, dipolar, H bonding or a mixture

Lots of bigger molecules have enough dispersion forces to be solids at
room temp

Molecular solids are held via intermolecular forces and have low melting
points

Benzoic acid crystals have molecule pairs held using H bonds, when the
pairs stack it’s held together using dispersion forces

Network Solids

Have high melting points

Bonding patterns decides its properties

Diamond is held together using covalent bonds
