Unit 40 dementia care: P1, P2 and M1 assignment. Three key states which commonly get confused and can be misdiagnosed as dementia are depression and confusional states; however, these presentations have very subtle differences. “Delirium is only one of a long list of reversible or partly reversible medical conditions that can mimic and mislead the doctors into assigning the wrong diagnosis of dementia.” (Ellison, n.d.) Similarly, the symptoms of depression are often mistaken for dementia. As it is not easy to define the symptoms because many people with dementia develop signs of depression, such as feelings of low self-esteem and confidence, tearfulness and appetite, concentration and memory problems; this leads misdiagnosis of dementia among depressed individuals. (, n.d.)
