Unit 28 P3 M2 D1 Supporting the needs of older people Megan Scully

P3: Explain ways in which health and social care workers support the independence and well-being
of older people.
M2: Assess ways in which health and social care workers support the independence and well-
being of older people.
D1: Evaluate ways in which the sectors work together to support the independence and well-being
of older people.

This assignment will aim to discuss the ways in which health and social care workers support and
independence and well-being of older people. Within this assignment I will demonstrate how the
choice and independence of older people is promoted through the use of the holistic approach and
the involvement of care planning. The use of the holistic approach will indisputably provide an
improved experience for service users as the physical. Intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual
health and requirements of the service user will be considered. This assignment will also discuss the
variety of different services available to service users, such as; social activities and equipment and
resources to support independent care. This assignment will also discuss principles of care that are
practiced to generate an enhanced experience for the service user, these include; anti-
discriminatory practice, respect and dignity. The assignment will go on to assess ways in which
health and social care workers deliver support and promote the independence of service users. This
will involve how the service user’s life will be made uncomplicated and a positive experience
delivered through support. I will then end the assignment by evaluating how health and social care
sectors work together to support the independence and well-being of the service user.

It is known that the population within the United Kingdom are now living much longer lives, this
does not mean that they are, however, leading healthier lives. The ageing population is rising
rapidly, with there currently being approximately 3 million individuals aged above 80, a figure that is
predicted to double by 2030. There are more individuals aged above 90 per annum and the number
of individuals aged 100 or above has escalated by 50% since 2002.

Providing care for elderly individuals has proved to be much more challenging, as these individuals
require much more support and have more requirements than those who are younger. During the
ageing process, the body cells commence degradation so a vast majority of skills and interests that
an individual was specifically good at previously may become challenging. Simple tasks such as
remaining mobile may become difficult and so it is crucial that a healthcare professional is able to
promote the independence of this individual.

The service user does not simply require medication as this would merely tend to the individual’s
health. The service user will require their needs to be fulfilled which can be accomplished through
the use of the holistic approach. There are a variety of different support methods that can be
applied to the service to enhance daily life and the individual’s health. A large number of individuals
state that their personal independence is amongst the most important to them in regard to their
health. Adults aim to conserve their independence for as long as possible, however, this may not
always be possible during the ageing process and independence may need to be fought for.

It is crucial that when dealing with service users stereotyping is avoided, especially in regard to the
individual’s personal independence. This is due to the fact that unconstructive images of
independence can grow to be self-fulfilling. The service user may begin to experience dwindling
expectations of personal performance or abilities. Once these expectations have been established,
the service user may assume the qualities of these expectations. This could be, for example, failing
memories, reduced mobility, decreased will to live, lower expectations of personal abilities, all of
which could have detrimental effects on the individual’s health. Independence is thought to be one
of the most vital qualities an individual can possess, and so the independence of the service user
