, QUESTION 1
THE CATCHER IN THE RYE AND WHEN RAIN CLOUDS
GATHER
In the following essay I will firstly discuss how Salinger uses narrative point of
view secondly im going to discuss the setting of the novel and thirdl how the
symbolism of duck and fish in the lagoon represent Holden’s feeling of
isolation and loss in the novel The catcher in the rye by author Ruth Scheepers.
In the novel the whole story is told in the first person narrative point of view.
He begins there with “If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll
probably want to hear is where I was born” (Salinger 1945:01) this clearly
show that He tells the story of what happened back then before he was
admitted at a metal hospital. Holden tells the story from the mental hospital
which makes it a flashback story. The whole story is written in his own words
how he see things. Salinger (1945:82) “me I said which I think was a very
dump answer” it shows that Holden is an example of an innocent child against
the big adult world. The personal pronouns in the novel shows Holden’s
personal activities that he does.
The setting of the novel was in a serious time in America.
