Human Cardiovascular System – Life Sciences /
Biology (Medical Students)
Overview
The cardiovascular system transports blood, nutrients, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and hormones
throughout the body.
Key Functions: - Oxygen delivery to tissues - Carbon dioxide removal - Nutrient and hormone distribution -
Immune response support - Thermoregulation
Heart Anatomy
• Atrium (left & right): receives blood from veins
• Ventricle (left & right): pumps blood to arteries
• Valves: ensure unidirectional flow
• Tricuspid (right AV)
• Mitral / Bicuspid (left AV)
• Pulmonary valve
• Aortic valve
• Coronary arteries: supply myocardium
• Pericardium: protective sac around the heart
Diagram: Human Heart

• Color code: oxygenated (red), deoxygenated (blue)
Blood Vessels
• Arteries: carry blood away from the heart; thick walls for high pressure
• Veins: carry blood to the heart; valves prevent backflow
• Capillaries: thin walls; allow gas and nutrient exchange
Blood Composition
• Red Blood Cells (RBCs): transport oxygen
• White Blood Cells (WBCs): immune defense
• Platelets: blood clotting
• Plasma: water, proteins, nutrients, hormones
