, Introduction to Rheumatic fever
• Rheumatic fever is a systemic illness in which there is
inflammation of several organs and is considered as
connective tissue disease or collagen vascular disease
• Non-suppurative complication of group A streptococcus
pharyngitis
• Affecting primarily joints, Heart, CNS, and Skin
– Leads to arthritis, carditis, chorea, erythema marginatum, and
subcutaneous nodules.

• The peak age for its occurrence is 5– 15 years.

• However, carditis is the only known long-term
complication while all the others are self-limiting.
• Proper treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis virtually
eliminates the risk of rheumatic fever.
• The onset of symptoms occurs 1-3 weeks after the throat
