Introduction
In this assignment I will writing an individual report about two businesses that trade in
contrasting international markets. How they get affected by the main features of globalization
and find out information about the trading blocks, the barriers and support the businesses face
when they operate internationally.
For this assignment I have the chosen to write about BP and Tesco. Which both is trading and
operating nationally and are a very big successful company.
P1. Explain why two businesses operate in contrasting international markets.
“BP is a multinational oil and gas company based in London, United Kingdom. It is one of the
world's seven oil and gas supermajors. it is the world's sixth-largest oil and gas company, the
sixth-largest energy company by market capitalization and the company with the world's 12th-
largest revenue. It is a vertically integrated company operating in all areas of the oil and gas
industry, including exploration and production, refining, distribution and marketing,
petrochemicals, power generation and trading. It also has renewable energy.”
BP operates in Europe, North America and Asia. BP are as Tesco a public limited company which
means that they are making a huge amount of profit annually.
BP is making their products occasionally and will that way get more revenue and higher profit.
BPs aim is to move energy around the globe so that everyone can easily get electricity and be
available for the people who doesn’t have it. It says that there are over 1 billion people who
don’t have electricity. Therefore, BP are investing in energy so they can make it available for
many and those who don’t have it. As BP wants this to happen by the year 2035 they have an
idea for it to success by reducing carbon emisson As well as Tescos aim is to run 100 percent on
renewable elecricity in ireland and UK and planing on worldwide by 2030. This aim is very
similar to BPs aim also.
To operate in a developed country can be very beneficial for the businesses because they can
hire people that are very essential for the work and with right skills etc. One example is that
they maybe hire a professional scientist that are very good at his work and very creative with
many ideas. And maybe find some good ideas for the company to be more successful or
, develop. Or some people that are very good and knows a lot of trading and operating rules and
procedures to them.
As they are dealing with other countries in different market such as developed, advanced
emerging, secondary emerging and frontier markets it is very much easier and possible for
them to achieve their aim to move energy around the globe and reduce carbon emission with
their new technologies.
These new technologies that their scientist and engineers have come up with is to produce
more oil more efficiently from already existent resources.
Tesco is a British multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer. Tesco is the third
largest retailer in the world measured by gross revenue and the ninth largest retailer in the
world measured by revenues.
Tesco has over 500.000 employees and they produce groceries, food, clothes and banking etc.
Which is why they choosing to operate multinational. By doing so they are evolving and
expanding the employment opportunities in those countries.
By operating in an international market, the business has more and better chance to expand its
business. As they will be able to sell products for lower prices which then makes the profit
increasing, while the customers are taking an advantage of this at the same time.
Another is that they will be getting better transportation for lower prices as they are operating
in a developed country.
Tesco advantages for operating internationally are also the same that they will increase the
employment rate and improve the economy in that countries. Other advantages will be that the
people that they will hire in those countries will be aware of the rules and regulation of trading
and know how to go by those rules. Tesco needs to be on top and ahead of its game so they stil
remain being the largest market share. Which is due to the competitive market they are in and
must sell the products for the best prices to be ahead of their competitive which are ASDA,
Sainsbury, Aldi, Lidl etc.
Operate internationally is a benefit for both Tesco and BP.
By providing and offering employment jobs, the country reduces taxes from them as a favor for
providing more jobs.
By operating in bigger countries like china, India or less developed countries. Means that the
businesses will be getting growth in the sales due to the high number of people that lives in
those countries.
