Given a liming material - CaO, Ca(OH)2, and CaCO3 - describe the reaction between
the material and the soil, naming any intermediate products and showing how the
increase in pH occurs.

, Day 34
Calcium carbonate will react with carbonic acid H2CO3 in the soil solution
and this slowly dissolves the calcium to give calcium bicarbonate. The
calcium ion replaces a hydrogen on the exchange site and the bicarbonate
ion accepts hydrogens to give back carbonic acid again. Then the calcium
bicarbonate breaks down to give off carbon dioxide and water. Product
reacting with the carbonic acid gives us water and releases a carbon
dioxide. Each of the other products, calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide,
react with carbonic acid in the soil solution and gives a very fine grained
calcium carbonate. This calcium carbonate will react again with the
carbonic acid. Replace hydrogen off the exchange site, hydrogen reacts
with the bicarbonate ion and releases carbon dioxide and forms water.
Given specific microbial functions in the nitrogen cycle, identify the genus or genera
of organisms involved, or give a bacterial genus, name its function in the nitrogen
cycle.
Give this one a try later!
Rhizobium - symbiotic nitrogen fixation, colonizes roots and takes
atmospheric dinitrogen gas and transfers to ammonium compounds within
the structure.
Nitrous ammonous - for nitrification, aerobic conditions, it will transfer to
nitrite into nitrate and eventually nitrate bacter
Then in non-symbiotic - blue-green algae, azotobacter, operate as free
living in association with grass roots in oxygen rich environments, and in
oxygen poor environments clostridium will be involved
Ammonification - many species and fungi
Given a description of an event in the nitrogen cycle, name the event, for example,
mineralization, ammonification, nitrification, immobilization, denitrification, and
volatilization. Given the name of the event, describe the event.

Mineralization - refers to an element that Mineralization - begins in an
organic form and transfers into an inorganic form (plant available), OM go
through decomposition process of aerobic and anaerobic to release
ammonium compound that is plant available. Aerobic process by which we
go from ammonium ions to nitrate ions, in between convection of nitrite,
done by nitrous ammonous, acid producing reaction and also consumes
oxygen in the process. Nitrobacter, take nitrite and further oxidize it into
nitrate. Nitrite ion is toxic if left in soil.
Immobilization - refers to a inorganic plant available form that becomes
incorporated within the body of microorganisms and become immobilized
(non-available form)
Denitrification - process when oxygen becomes limited, microorganisms
will utilize nitrite and nitrate in anaerobic conditions and reduce nitrogen
and release nitrogen a gaseous N2 or N2O
Volatilization - refers to the gaseous loss of ammonia from a soil system,
ammonium ions come into contact with calcium carbonate, ammonium gas
formed and loss in the system
Given several different forms of nitrogen, identify those that are plant-available,
gaseous, oxidized, reduced, organic, leachable, or fixed by vermiculite.
Give this one a try later!
Plant available - ammonium ions and nitrate ions
Nitrite - toxic compound if in the soil solution
Gaseous forms - N2, NO, N2O, NO2, can be lost out of the system if they
formed in the soil
Ammonium can come in contact with calcium carbonate and yield
ammonium gas and is gaseous as well
the material and the soil, naming any intermediate products and showing how the
increase in pH occurs.
