This report will Examine how effective recruitment and selection contribute to business
success
Workforce planning
Businesses need to match skills, knowledge and number of employees to their current and
future needs. To work out their needs, they need to review the number and skills of
employees they have now, what they think will happen in the future and the number that
they will need in the future. In large organisations with more than 250 employees, the types
of skills required will depend on the industry that they work in. For example, a retail
business may need staff to put out stock and to serve customers face to face. A production
company may need staff to work in packing or on the production line. P1
Aldi
I am going to discuss Aldi and their recruitment and selection process.
Recruitment is a process of a business seeking to hire the most appropriate candidate for a
vacancy. When you are recruiting for a vacancy the business must ensure they are
advertising in the best way, to attract the most suitable candidates for the business. The
selection process is where you whittle down the candidates based on experience,
qualifications and other capabilities to make sure they are able to fill the job role. The
selection process is quite lengthy because of the series of steps that need to be done before
selecting one individual for the role. Recruitment and selection is a very important function
in a business as it takes a lot of time and it is costly. Recruiting the wrong person can
seriously impact on existing staff morale, which can in turn impact on the customers and
overall business success. Supp p1 and d1
A big organisation like Aldi would recruit for different roles within the business. So they will
need to identify the available vacancies. Vacancies can occur for a variety of reasons such as
the following:
Gabrielle Hale Unit 8 Recruitment and Selection
, 2
The business expanding – a business like Aldi finds its sales and customers increasing
daily, this means they are building more stores so they need more staff to work in
these stores.
Job roles changing – in most supermarkets they use self-checkout which means there
has been more demand for staff stocking shelves and in different departments, but
because Aldi have decided to keep with checkout members they will need staff to
stock shelves because their staff are busy on checkout.
Systems changing – through Aldi you are able to get your shopping delivered but this
is through a system done in store on a tablet, so Aldi need specialised staff who
know how to operate the tablet ordering system to ensure the home delivery order
is going out to that customer.
Vacancies caused by staff turnover – staff leave Aldi for different reasons such as
promotions, or different jobs with another organisation.
Seasonal fluctuations – over Christmas and Easter periods Aldi gets very business so
will recruit staff on a temporary basis to help cover the busy period.
Other business may recruit for different reasons they are as follows:
Product development for e.g Apple or Samsung would have to recruit for this reason.
Labourers will need to recruit more men for a week to cover a big job.

Internal and External recruitment
A business like Aldi would recruit internally and externally. Internal recruitment is where the
business will advertise a vacancy to existing staff members making it very exclusive, and only
current Aldi staff members will have the opportunity to apply for the job vacancy. External
recruitment is where the vacancy is also open to members of the public giving them the
opportunity to work for Aldi.
If Aldi recruits for a vacancy internally it will not affect their budget as it can be sufficient
just to send an email to existing staff about the new job opening. It is also beneficial as the
candidates already know the company and it can encourage career progression for existing
staff. On the other hand by them recruiting internally they are limiting their choice of
candidates and if an existing employee is successful with their application they will then
need to be replaced for the job role they are currently carrying out, this means they will
need a new recruitment plan. It can also cause problems amongst employees because of the
change, and the employee may not generate new ideas. So it is important that Aldi when
recruiting internally are ensuring that the candidate is the most appropriate for the vacancy.
When recruiting externally Aldi will find they have a higher number of candidates coming
through for the vacancy. These candidates may have fresh new ideas that can really benefit
the company and they may have a set skills list that existing staff do not currently have,
