UNIT 5 TASK 1:
P1: Explain the importance of promoting equality and diversity for individuals
with different needs.
Definition of equality within a care home:
Equality is ensuring individuals are treated fairly and treated according to their
needs. They should be treated with the same amount of respect as others and
should not be discriminated against for their caste, colour, religion or sexual
orientation.
Examples of demonstrating equality in a care home:
For example if in a care home an elderly person wants a certain type of meal at
breakfast, that is their need and it should be fulfilled which is why equality plays a big
role in a care home.
Benefits of equality within a care home:
The benefits of having equality in a care home is that everyone is treated fairly and
this is highly important in a care home setting as this shows that there is no
discrimination because of maybe their skin colour or their ethnic group. Having
equality in a care home increases the self esteem of the people there. In Nusrat’s
case, she has learning disabilities and suffers from epilepsy, in order to meet the
required needs for Nusrat, professionals need to understand that Nusrat needs her
voice to be heard, but because she has learning disabilities it is hard for her to
express her needs which is why it is suggested she has a advocate. As her mother is
her main carer it is likely she put her own views forward but not Nusrat’s which could
affect Nusrat’s representation. To prevent this, an advocate that can communicate
for Nusrat by putting her views forward by using makaton can help express her
needs and this can then be explained to her mother. Having equality represented
provides reassurance to Nusrat as she will sense that her needs are being met and
that she is being supported.
Definition of diversity within a care home:
Diversity is the way people are different from one another and recognising that
everyone is different and it also means valuing the differences between people.
Examples of allowing for diversity in a care home:
For example, some include having a different language, food choices, clothing,
music, religion and health conditions. We all are unique and have something that
makes us diverse from each person, and in a care home this is what makes each
person confident and happy, because they are different and unique. This is allowed
in a care home as care workers are sure to ask the residents what their likes and
dislikes they have, for example for breakfast they may not prefer something because
that is their dislike and this is taken into consideration. For example providing food
for them in line with their culture, allowing them to wear clothes in line with their
preferences.
Benefits of diversity within a care home:
The benefits of having diversity in a care home is that people are different and
,diverse as they have different choices compared to other people, they have different
likes and dislikes and this way they communicate with people and interact depending
on their likes and interests. This way people in a care home are more able to do
things that they want to do because maybe they’re interested in it. In Nusrat’s case,
diversity is important as her needs are different to others, she has learning
disabilities and has epilepsy. The way a person speaks to another individual will be
different to how they speak to Nusrat as she understands makaton and makaton is
how she communicates to the service provider. The benefits of Nusrat receiving
diversity is that she will be treated differently according to her needs based on her
likes and dislikes, what she is able to do, and how her plan needs to be made.
Your opinion on how promoting equality and diversity can meet students
needs:
Equality and diversity can meet students needs as they should be treated with the
same attitude, for example giving motivation to students to ensure that they are
learning at the best of their ability. Equality can be promoted as they can treat
everyone with the same amount of fairness and empowering students to do what
they want to do, for example they can be given the same resources, learning and the
same treatment as other students. Diversity can be promoted as being in a mixed
race environment is promoting diversity as there are a range of ethnic groups that
speak different languages. And this can be promoted as people can be more open to
learning about other cultures and preferences.
P2: Explain the skills and the personal attributes necessary for professionals
who care for individuals with different needs.
The skills and personal attributes for professionals who care for service users that
have different needs is important because if they apply the 6C’s which are
compassion, care, competence, communication, courage and commitment, this
would make the professional have a stronger form of bond with the service users as
they feel important and well cared for.
The professionals involved in Nusrat’s case are: an advocate, centre manager, the
GP and a specialist nurse practitioner. The professionals need a variety of skills and
attributes to provide good care for their service users to ensure that good care is
being provided for them. Personal attributes are qualities that a person has that suits
their personality, these are based on your values and what you believe in, such as
respecting everyone, treating them equally to others and being kind (Haworth,2016).
One of the professionals working with Nusrat is an advocate. An advocate is used in
the team to help Nusrat express her needs as she is unable to express her wants
and wishes so the advocate is there to help her represent her needs in the best way.
To do so, the advocate will need to develop relationships with her family and friends
in order to find out more about her. The advocate should speak to the mum as she is
the one who is closest to her, and will need really good communication skills. This
should be quite easy as Nusrat likes to be around friendly people and attaches
herself easily. The advocate must be flexible when working with Nusrat by spending
, time with her by doing stuff she likes, such as dancing or doing drama, this will
develop a strong bond with Nusrat. The advocate needs to be competent to
understand what her needs are and must help her complete emails and letters
needed for her care plan. An advocate should also have problem solving skills, in
case if something comes up with Nusrat, an advocate should also have patience as
she is handling a patient who has a learning disability and being patient is one of the
biggest skills an advocate should have.Personal attributes an advocate should have
is a good tone of voice when speaking to Nusrat, this changes how the service user
will behave towards you and how they can respond back to you. Nusrat should be
able to rely and depend on the advocate so they can help her and help express her
wants for her care plan as she has learning disabilities which could affect her speech
in saying what her needs are.
Another professional working with Nusrat is a G.P. A general practitioner (G.P) is
working with Nusrat to discuss her improved management of Nusrat’s epilepsy. A
skill a G.P should have is competence, this is because the GP needs to be able to
understand Nusrat’s needs and meet her needs to the best of their ability so that she
can have the best care. As her epilepsy is not controlled well, having the GP discuss
her management is very good. Another skill is communication and it is used well in
Nusrat’s case as the GP has referred her to a specialist nurse practitioner, who is
able to help her with controlling her epilepsy. The personal attribute that is needed
for a GP is having resilience. This is highly important as having this attribute can
mean having the skill to prevent overwhelming from occurring which is frequent
when GP comes under pressure. This is important as by having developed resilience
it shows the service user some comfort as sometimes the news given to service
users is nerve racking, and by knowing the GP is providing comfort for them as they
are resilient makes the service user comfortable.
Another professional working with Nusrat is a specialist nurse practitioner who is an
expert in epilepsy, and the G.P had referred Nusrat to the nurse so she could get
specialist help. A skill a specialist nurse practitioner should have is good
communication as this is a way they can develop positive relationships with Nusrat
and this can boost her self esteem. Also communication is vital as sharing
information between professionals happens quite a lot and in Nusrat’s case, a GP
referred her to a specialist nurse and communication is highly important as the GP
should take all written notes and forward it to the specialist nurse who will then
examine Nusrat’s condition and see how she can help. The personal attributes that
are needed for a specialist nurse is having an appropriate tone of voice when
communicating with Nusrat due to her learning disability, Nusrat’s nurse should be
able to understand her condition and know what she is doing in order to help her
improve the management of her epilepsy.
Nusrat will also be involved with an epilepsy nurse practitioner (ENP). the ENP will
help nusrat with her seizures by providing her medicines. Before this happens, the
