Summary
Lily Gullick is a wannabe bird watcher. Together with her husband Aiden she lives in
a new-build flat, instead of the older buildings which once stood there. Intrigued by
the social divide she begins to turn her eyes from the sky and the birds to the
windows opposite, directly into the homes of their neighbors. Lily signed herself up as
a doctor, because she wanted to avoid the crappy WiFi in the building. By this little lie
the residents of Lily’s flat see her as Dr. Gullick. Lily is asked to treat patients while
she actually doesn’t know a thing about medicines. However, Lily doesn’t want to
reveal her secret yet.

Lily starts to spark a brief friendly relationship with a older woman in a flat opposite,
named Jean. Jean seems to need some help so Lily tries to offer her that by putting
her number into Jean’s phone. On her way to Jean’s flat Lily found out her
neighborhood isn’t as safe as she thought it was. Jean advises Lily to take good care
of all the dangers that haunt the place.
A day later, Jean is found dead. Lily is convinced that someone killed her and is
determined to find out who. She starts spying on her neighbors even more and starts
making short lists about her suspects and start giving them names. Her husband
doesn´t notice what Lily is up to, because he is too busy writing his book. In the
meantime she starts to fancy her neighbor Lowell.

A few days after Jean’s death, Lily is called by Jean’s number. While she tries to find
out who called her she meets two boys in a building that soon will be destroyed, but
the boys do not have anywhere else to go. They give her some more information
about what they have seen and tell her something about a man who bothered them.
Lily is convinced that this men is the killer she is looking for. They tell her he had a
cut in his hand.
After watching her neighbors for a long time she finally finds the man she is looking
for. However, she still needs evidence that he really did it before she can go to the
police. She wants to hear inside the building so she asks her fellow worker how she
can listen inside someone else’s place. He gives her information about listening
equipment and Lily decides to listen to his advice and buys the equipment. However,
she can still not hear well inside of the building so she decides to break in to place
the listening equipment from the inside. Together with Chris, the boy of the Alaska
House, she breaks in to the apartment, but the placement of the listening equipments
fails and Lily is caught by the police.
