Scenario #1
GCM recently rolled out a new set of care guidelines to help streamline workflows and enhance
patient outcomes. However, during a weekly administrative team meeting, resistance surfaces.
Karen, a long-time staff member, crosses her arms and exclaims, “These changes will make our jobs
harder!” Sitting beside her, Tom nods in agreement and adds, “We’ve been doing fine without these
guidelines for years.” The tension in the room grows, and others begin to murmur. Team Leader
Sarah takes a calming breath and addresses the concern head-on. “I understand this feels like a big
change,” she says reassuringly. “Let’s talk about it. These guidelines aren’t meant to add stress—
they’re designed to make our processes smoother and help us deliver even better patient care.”
Sarah invites the team to share their specific concerns and listens without judgment. She explains
how the guidelines will reduce duplicated efforts, support documentation accuracy, and ultimately
benefit staff and patients. By the end of the meeting, while not all concerns are resolved, the team
agrees to pilot the guidelines for two weeks and revisit the discussion. Sarah’s empathy and open-
door approach help ease resistance and foster collaboration.
Skill Application #1
Opportunity Statement: There is an opportunity to reduce resistance to change and promote team
buy-in through empathetic leadership that validates concerns and aligns staff with the shared goal of
improving patient care.
Social and Emotional Power Skill: Empathy involves actively understanding and acknowledging
others’ feelings and perspectives. Sarah demonstrated empathy by responding calmly to Karen and
Tom's concerns, validating their discomfort, and creating a safe space for dialogue. Rather than
shutting down resistance, she leaned into it, listening to the emotional undertones and addressing
them directly. This reduced defensiveness and allowed Sarah to reframe the change as a support
tool rather than a burden, shifting the narrative from fear to shared purpose.
Strength: One of my personal strengths is emotional intelligence. I would apply this by tuning in to
the mood and tone of the group, recognizing the stress behind the resistance, and responding with
patience. This allows me to build rapport and foster trust during uncertain transitions.
Communication Strategy: A consensus-building communication strategy would be appropriate here.
This approach encourages inclusive dialogue and shared decisionmaking, giving staff a voice in
implementing the change. By framing the guidelines as a pilot and involving staff in evaluating their
effectiveness, this strategy addresses the opportunity to align the team around common goals while
minimizing feelings of top-down enforcement.
