Unit 2
Concentrate on keeping up your standards

Task 1

Practical 1
Title: preparation of a standard solution of sodium carbonate

Aim: to prepare the 250 cm3 of N/10 standard solution of sodium carbonate.

Equipment:

• Chemical balance

• Watch glass

• Weight box

• 250ml beaker

• Stirring rod

• 250ml measuring flask

• Wash bottle

• Weighing tube

• Sodium Carbonate

• Funnel

• Funnel stand

• Distilled water

• Weighing boat

• Pasteur pipette

, Risk assessment:

• Wearing lab coats, gloves, goggles.

• Wash hands after potentially hazardous material and before leaving the laboratory

• Chemical/Procedure hazard

• reduce risk disposal

• Sodium Carbonate Irritant

Method:

• Weigh an empty weighing boat and record its mass in the table (see reading below).

• Take the boat off the balance and add a little sodium carbonate to the boat, using a spatula, place the
boat back on the balance and check the mass, when you have added about 1.5g (grams) of sodium
carbonate, record the mass accurately.

• Transfer the sodium carbonate to a 100cm3 (cubic centimetres) beaker. 4. Now reweigh the boat
recording its mass in the table.

• Add about 75cm3 of distilled water to the beaker containing the sodium carbonate and stir with a
glass rod to dissolve.

• Transfer the solution to 250 cm3 volumetric flask using a funnel, washing down the stirring rod with a
small amount of distilled water from a wash bottle. Rinse the beaker into the funnel again using
distilled water from the wash bottle, and finally rinse the funnel and remove it before making up to the
mark on the volumetric flask with distilled water. Add the last few drops of distilled water very
carefully using a Pasteur pipette.

Practical 2
Title: Titration between hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate using an indicator

Aim: Titration between hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate using an indicator to find the concentration of
chloric acid

Equipment:

• Hydrochloric acid 0.12 mol dm- 3 Sodium carbonate

• Burette (50.0 cm3 )

• 250 cm3 Conical Flask
