Fertilization Occurs in the upper region of the fallopian tubes within 12 hours of ovulation and 2 to 3 days of insemination, the average durations of viability for the ovum and sperm, respectively. Once the ovum is fertilized, its membrane undergoes changes that prevent the entry of other sperm.
