1. The School as a System/Organization

A school can be seen as a complex system made up of many connected parts that work
together to achieve a common goal, which is quality teaching and learning. According
to Senge (2006), a system is made up of parts that depend on each other, and the
success of one part affects the whole. In a school, these parts include teachers, learners,
parents, administrators, and the wider community. Each of these groups plays an
important role, and when they work together, the school functions smoothly.

Teachers are often the central part of the school system because they deliver learning
directly to the students. However, their work depends on the support of the
administration, parents, and the learners themselves. The administration ensures that
there are resources, clear policies, and a positive school culture. Parents support
learning at home and encourage their children to take education seriously. The
community also contributes by providing resources and setting expectations for the
school’s standards. According to Bush (2011), effective schools are those that create
strong relationships between these groups. When one part fails, it can affect the whole
system. For example, if the administration does not provide enough teaching materials,
even good teachers may struggle to deliver lessons effectively.

The interaction among the different components of the school system can have a strong
impact on its overall performance. For example, when teachers and parents
communicate regularly, learners tend to perform better because they receive consistent
support. On the other hand, if there is poor communication between teachers and
administrators, it can lead to misunderstandings and stress among staff. I have seen this
in my own experience where a lack of clear communication about timetable changes
caused confusion and lateness among both teachers and learners. It showed that every
decision in one part of the system influences others.

Managing a school as an organization comes with many challenges. One major
challenge is dealing with conflicting interests. Teachers may want smaller class sizes to
improve learning, but the administration may face budget limits. Parents may have high
