(PO 5) In today's changing healthcare environment, it is more important than ever for professional nurses to be skilled in collaborating with professionals from other healthcare disciplines. What communication strategies can professional nurses use to specifically promote collaboration with other healthcare disciplines and professionals? It is very important to have an open and effective line of communication between all healthcare providers. Nurses must quickly acquire skills in collaboration with doctors, physical therapist, pharmacist, surgeons, residents, nurse practitioners, social workers, lab technicians and many other caregivers. Working collaboratively with set standards for communication safeguards the patients and improves the work environment for staff as well. The more effort and practice is put in the healthcare setting, the more instinctive communication skills will become. The best way to improve patient care and avoid incident is through team building that focuses on effective communication among disciplines (Babiker, et al., 2014). Quality and safety for patients rely on effective communication among all health team members. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality released a research-based, team-building and communication program called TeamStepps (Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performances and Patient Safety) in response to dangerous conditions outlines in various reports on patient safety in healthcare settings (Hood, 2018). I have never heard or read about the I PASS THE BATON hand-off strategy, in my opinion, it’s a great in-depth tool in proving patient information. One of the communication processes that we use at my workplace is SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation). This tool has helped us to facilitate prompt and appropriate communication with the doctors when calling about our patients and we are giving hand-off- report to the oncoming nurse.
