STUDY QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
4 types of steering systems - ANSWER-Rack and pinion (manual), Power
steering (electric motor), Hydraulic power steering, and Electro hydraulic
power steering
Rack and pinion (manual) - ANSWER-steering wheel. steering column. pinion
gear. steering rack. tie rod. steering arms. roller bearing. frame of the car
Power steering (electric motor) - ANSWER-steering wheel. brushless dc
motor. ECU. worm screw. worm ger. planetary gear set. steering column.
pinion. steering rack. tie rod. steering arms. roller bearing. frame of the car.
ECU - ANSWER-takes into account torque applied by the driver, steering
angle, steering wheel speed, vehicle speed.
Brushless DC motor - ANSWER-if it breaks the planetary gear set allow it to
be driven manually.
Hydraulic power steering - ANSWER-pressurized hydraulic fluid in a pump
Steering knuckle - ANSWER-connects wheel to suspension
Damper/shock absorber - ANSWER-piston sliding in hydraulic oil. helps
dissipate head. connects the car frame to the axle or control arm
strut - ANSWER-a damper surrounded by a spring. coil overs are adjustable
versions of this.
spring - ANSWER-keeps the suspension at a certain height
Coil springs - ANSWER-most common. spiraled steel rod. it absorbs energy
but needs a damper to dissipate energy. has a rubber bump stop to stop the
spring from being fully compressed.
leaf springs - ANSWER-1. different sized steel layers bundle together by
rebound clips (clamps).
2. it is fixed to the axle. rubber bushings help dampen. connects to the frame
via a shackle.
3. a damper is used in conjunction.
