1. a) Non-Standard measuring is the foundation of real measurement, without it kids don’t
understand the importance of the more complex concepts.
b) Benefit of non-standard units where people who are familiar with that
unit may be better able to understand it. If I said someone was as tall as my shoulder,
then anyone who knew me would know what I meant - and would be able to visualise
the other person's height.
c) Non-Standard Measurement is a way of introducing pre-school or
Grade R kids to measurement using a non-standard unit. It involves finding out how big,
Heavy, long, or small something is and how two or more objects compared to each
other.
2. Estimation refers to a mental picture that a person uses to make a measurement and the
visual information used to measure an object or maybe make a comparison without using
any measuring instrument. There practical skills which we use on our daily basis for
estimation. Such as finding out how many grams of sugar can be used to make two loaf of
brown bread?, how many liters of water needed to feed 35 goads?. Will your car fit into the
in my garage? By applying this practical in class it will help learners to focus on the attribute
being measured and think about the unit that can be used.
3. I will first ask learner’s questions related to the topic (the formula of the perimeter of the
rectangle and that of a square) and see if they have any idea of the topic in my lesson. After
they have participated in the question, I will tell them what we will do today and in this case
it’s the formula of the perimeter of a rectangle and square.
