What, in your view, is more important: data continuity with new
versions for old programs, or new, innovative satellite programs?

Give this one a try later!

,Remote sensing collects data in particular areas of spectrum (where
the change occurs), location + width important for detection
purposes
- broad classes (dead/live vegetation) separated w/ few, broad
wavelength ranges, specific classes (different rock types) need
comparison of many narrow wavelength ranges
- ex. alive vegetation is NIR 50% and visible 8%; dead vegetation is
NIR 40%/ visible 30%

The ICESat (Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite) uses a laser
altimeter which sends pulses of visible light to earth (the round time
for the laser pulse between the instrument and the earth's surface
is used to measure/monitor ice sheet elevations over time.) ICESat
measures ice sheet mass, balance, cloud and aerosol heights as
well as land topography and vegetation characteristics.

- global warming/ice sheet mass reduction, aerosol heights=ozone layer

Equivalent (Conic)
- Earth projected on a cone, shapes distorted but areas preserved
- Good for representing parts of the Earth and enable
direct surface comparisons within the map
- Examples include Mollweide map and the Gall-peters map

Conformal (Cylindrical)
- Projected on a cylinder, distortion at poles and areas, but
angles between positions preserved
- Convenient for sea navigation
- Example, Mercator

-Continuity; get data from the old and learn from that to
improve new innovations/ advancements (ex.previously Landsat
would shut off and never take any images of the water;
advanced Landsat imaging over water, collecting images of the
worlds many endangered coral reefs)

- New, innovative satellite programs; don't try different things and
only advance at the things that we already know how to, never make
any new scientific discoveries.

Definition

1. Transmittance; some radiation (up to 100%)
penetrates into + through certain surface materials
(ex. water)
2.Absorptance; some radiation absorbed through electron/
molecular reactions in medium; portion of this energy then
remitted, usually at longer wavelengths
3. Reflectance; some radiation reflects + scatters away from
target at various angles, depending on surface roughness +
angle of incidence of the rays
