LECOM Interview Questions Exam And
Answers 100% Verified

Tell me about yourself. - ANSWER I am from Syracuse, New York. I grew up with one
sister in a household that was heavily based on sports. I played field hockey and softball
growing up, and I was often injured. It was my orthopedic doctor that sparked my initial
interest in medicine. I am a current senior at the University at Albany. I study biology
and public health. I am a first generation college student. While in college I participated
in neuroscience research focusing on brain growth factors released during exercise
and their effect on the onset of Alzheimer's. Literature review and performing lab
techniques has allowed me to improve my critical thinking skills, academic writing, and
confidence in participating in research. I am also a part of Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority,
where I am in charge of the fundraisers for our philanthropies and community service.
Being able to give back to the community as well as a bigger cause has been rewarding.
I am graduating this December and I plan to work as a full-time medical scribe at
St.Peters hospital in Albany. Some of my hobbies include reading, painting, and hiking
waterfalls. I am grateful to have the opportunity to interview for LECOM.

What is a recent obstacle you've faced and how did you overcome it? - ANSWER In my
previous position as a medical assistant, I was the youngest and least qualified
employee, so I felt intimidated to ask my peers for help. One time I had to give a patient
pre-surgery forms to fill out. There were many different versions in the front office, but I
was unsure which was the correct one since I saw it done once during training. Because
I was scared to ask for help, I made an educated guess on which forms to use.
Unfortunately, I chose the wrong forms and created a processing issue for the doctor.

Following this mistake, I learned it was better to ask for help than to hurt my and my
peers' productivity. I first fixed my mistake by asking a nurse I worked closely with how
to know which forms to give to patients. I wrote down what she taught me for future
reference. As I began to notice how helpful it was to have my notes, I continued to write
down new skills I learned. At the end of the summer, I gave a copy to my boss for new
employees in case they are also nervous to ask questions.

Why osteopathic medicine? - ANSWER As someone who studied public health as an
undergrad, osteopathic medicine better aligns with its values than allopathic medicine. I
like how osteopathic medicine focuses on a holistic approach to treating patients.
Focusing on the patient as a whole, rather than their symptoms or injuries is something I
respect and believe is important in creating a better provider-patient relationship. In
addition, I like how osteopathic medicine places a higher value in lifestyle behaviors and

, their effect on health. Using this information allows osteopathy to better implement
preventative care into medicine.

Strengths and Weaknesses? - ANSWER One of my strengths is I am dedicated. When I
say I will do something, I will give it my all. For example, when I put together my
sorority's pageant fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, I took on multiple roles.
The goal was to raise $1,000 but I pushed my team and we raised over $5,000.

Another one of my strengths is I am personable. I have been a cashier, waitress, and
medical assistant, which are all jobs that require a lot of energy and social skills. I love
to talk to patients or customers and go beyond of "how are you today" or "what are your
symptoms".

Weakness: I am a perfectionist, so I struggle to delegate tasks to my teammates when
working in groups because I do not want there to be mistakes. This has led to me taking
on too much and doing most of the work. As someone who usually takes charge, I now
like to ask people what they are most comfortable and best at doing in a project. It was
hard at first, but by trusting my team and with frequent communication, I am now more
comfortable in being reliant on others to do their part.

Med students have less empathy after med school than when they enter. Do you agree?
How do we prevent this? - ANSWER Despite it making sense for medical students to
become more empathetic throughout medical school, I do agree with this statement.
This is because medical students often suffer from burnout from focusing on passing
exams to get a license to practice medicine. I think the philosophy behind osteopathic
medicine has a better approach to sustaining empathy throughout medical school by
focusing on the person as a whole. I also believe decreasing empathy can be prevented
by teaching students to focus on relationship-centered communication.

What does professionalism mean to you? - ANSWER Professionalism is the way
someone conducts themselves in the workplace. This includes having the proper
technical skills to complete their job, wearing the appropriate attire, and having good
work habits and soft skills. Being professional in the medical field is of utmost
importance because patients want to place their trust and health in the hands of those
who are professionals. For LECOM this professionalism starts in school with the dress
code, honor code, and attendance policy.

Your greatest challenge? - ANSWER My greatest challenge is being a first generation
student. I have never been able to rely on my parents for college advice, filling out my
financial aid papers, or knowing what resources are on college campuses. I have also
