Leadership Skills and Mindset Reflection
C. Leadership and Management
Complete the following:
C1. Roles of a Leader and a Manager
Explain the differences between the roles of a leader and a manager.
Leaders have a set of skills that inspire people to improve organizations. They can
motivate others to help make changes based on their visions. They're not limited by processes
put in place by the organizations.
Managers have a title and associated responsibilities. While it's beneficial for managers to
be good leaders, it's not always the case. While leaders can focus on their visions and ideas,
managers must ultimately focus on processes already in place.
C2. Present Leadership and Management Skills
Identify three present leadership skills and three present management skills (i.e., skills
you possess).
Leadership –
1. Calm and collected in high-stress situations
2. Good listener – beneficial in hearing ideas from others
3. Trustworthy and honest – I don’t throw out my values to help my ideas.
, Management –
1. Organization – I like a step-by-step plan.
2. Delegation – Able to carry out a plan in which everyone has a task and
knows their responsibilities.
3. Decision-making – I can make decisions based on my information.
C2a. Leadership and Management Skills Used in Practice
Provide an example of how you use each of the leadership and management skills
identified in part C2 in your practice.
Being calm and collected in high-stress environments helps me function in a medical
emergency for one of my patients. I'm able to think and communicate clearly what I need, and
take instructions from others as well.
Being a good listener is helpful when other team members are having a difficult shift.
How can I help? Are you okay? I want to help others, but I need to listen to what they need from
me.
Being trustworthy and honest is good for relationships in my unit. I'm known for not
joining in the gossip and for being a good person to talk to when situations outside of work are
tense. In general, it fosters a healthy work environment.
Organizational skills help my shifts run smoothly. I make a step-by-step schedule of my
tasks for the entire shift; I write down everything I've done, highlight everything as soon as I've
charted it, and mark out tasks already completed. This way, when something happens that isn't
