Lab 2 Notebook

AR02 – Introduction to Microscopy

Objectives:
● Recognize the main parts of the microscope and explain their functions.
● Learn how to properly place and secure a specimen slide on the stage.
● Practice using adjustment knobs to bring a sample into clear focus.
● Understand when oil immersion is required versus when to use a dry objective.

Procedure:
1. Review parts and components
2. Load sample slide onto microscope
3. Select magnification
4. Make necessary adjustments to optimize sample visualization

Notes:
● Always begin at low magnification to avoid damaging the slide or lens.
● Use the coarse knob for large movements, then the fine knob for detail.
● Proper technique depends on the type of objective being used (oil vs. dry).
● The pointer can help locate and highlight areas of interest on the slide.

Results:
After completing this lab, I am able to identify the different parts of the microscope, explain their
basic roles, and demonstrate how to load and view a sample correctly. I also understand the
difference between dry and oil objectives and how to focus a specimen clearly using both coarse
and fine adjustments.
