, KT Waxman, DNP, MBA, RN, CNL, CENP, CHSE, FSSH, FAONL, FAAN, is a national nurse leader and
executive with extensive experience in healthcare and corporate settings. She is a professor at the
University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and is the director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice
(DNP) program. She is also the director of the California Simulation Alliance (CSA). In addition to
her work at UCSF and the CSA, she is the editor-in-chief for Nursing Administration Quarterly
(NAQ). An internationally known speaker and author, Waxman is also a past president of the
Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL) and past board member, serving as treasurer, for
the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL). She is a past president of the Society
for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), an international, inter-professional organization.
Dr. Waxman’s work has been published extensively and can be found in journals such as
Simulation in Healthcare, Clinical Simulation for Nursing, JONA, Journal of Nursing Education, NAQ,
Nurse Leader, and Creative Nursing. She has authored three books on finance and budgeting
including this third edition of Financial and Business Management for the Doctor of Nursing Practice.
She coauthored Healthcare Simulation Program Builder, is coeditor of Comprehensive Healthcare Sim-
ulation: Nursing to be published in 2022, and has authored several chapters in simulation and
leadership textbooks.
Dr. Waxman received her DNP from the University of San Francisco, with an emphasis on
health systems leadership and a concentration in clinical simulation. She holds certifications as
Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL), Certification in Executive Nursing Practice (CENP), Certification as
a Simulation Healthcare Educator (CHSE), and is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing
(FAAN), the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (FAONL), and the Society for Simu-

Mary Lynne Knighten, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, is a board-certified nurse executive with more than 30
years of progressive management experience in leading patient care operations, developing
staff, building clinical programs, improving patient satisfaction and quality outcomes, mitigat-
ing cost inefficiencies, controlling budgets, ensuring regulatory compliance, educating, conduct-
ing research, and negotiating contracts for major medical centers and teaching hospitals. She has
taught RN-to-BSN and DNP programs at private faith-based universities.
Dr. Knighten is a recognized expert, international speaker, and published author in the
areas of leadership, palliative care, patient- and family-centered care, patient/family engage-
ment, grant writing, health policy, and faith community nursing. She is currently a reviewer for
Nursing Administration Quarterly (NAQ), is on the editorial board of the International Journal of
Faith Community Nursing, and is co-editor of this edition of Financial and Business Management for
the Doctor of Nursing Practice, having authored the Healthcare Grant Writing chapter for the
book’s three editions. Her publications can be found in the International Journal for Faith Commu-
nity Nursing, the Journal of Christian Nursing, AONL’s Voice of Nursing Leadership, and Perspectives.
She is a subject matter expert for the American Nurses Association Nurse Executive and Nurse
Executive-Advanced certification exam prep courses.
Dr. Knighten earned a DNP in 2012 from the University of San Francisco’s Executive Leader-
ship program. Her expertise in patient- and family-centered care (PFCC) has resulted in sustain-
able PFCC practices, policies, and programs. She regularly consults with organizations regarding
PFCC.
Dr. Knighten currently is associate professor and DNP clinical residency coordinator at
Azusa Pacific University. She serves as program director for the Executive Leadership DNP Pro-
gram, and is adjunct faculty in both the Executive Leadership and Population Health Leadership
DNP programs at the University of San Francisco. She has served as an advisor, mentor, and
committee member for DNP students at six universities. She has served as project director for the
HealthImpact Perioperative Specialty Nurse Training Project and with California State University,
Northridge, as well as consulted in areas of quality and patient safety, regulatory compliance,
patient experience, finance and productivity, and disaster preparedness.
