Pikes Peak Community College: BIO 105, 05A Cellular respiration PRE-LAB QUESTIONS (with Answers) (Fall 2025)

Cellular Respiration

PRE-LAB QUESTIONS
1. What is the relationship between cellular ATP and cellular respiration? They are both
closely interconnected within cells. However, ATP is usually referred to as the
energy currency a cell because it provides the energy for various cellular
activities. Whereas, cellular respiration, involves the process of generating cells
ATP through the breakdown of organic molecules, such as glucose.

2. What is the difference between anaerobic respiration and fermentation? Anaerobic
respiration is a process in which cells produce energy in the absence of oxygen.
Fermentation, on the other hand, is a process in which microorganisms such as
bacteria or yeast convert sugars into alcohol or acids.

3. What metabolic process(es) utilize glycolysis? Glycolysis is a metabolic process that
is used by cells to convert glucose into energy. It is the first step in cellular
respiration, which is the process by which cells generate energy from the food
they consume. Glycolysis is a critical step in cellular respiration because it
provides the energy and precursor molecules needed for the next stages of
cellular respiration, including the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation.

4. Which metabolic process(es) occur in the cytoplasm, and which metabolic process(es)
occur in the mitochondria? Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm of cells, whereas the
citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation occur in the mitochondria. The
citric acid cycle produces high-energy electrons that are passed through a series
of electron transport chains in the mitochondria, which generate ATP through the
process of chemiosmosis.

EXPERIMENT 1: FERMENTATION BY YEAST

Data Tables

Purpose (What question is this experiment designed to answer?):

Hypothesis (Based on what you’ve learned in the pre-lab materials, write and If/Then statement
regarding the outcome of this experiment.):

Table 1: Yeast Fermentation Data

Initial Gas Height Final Gas Height
Tube Net Change
(mm) (mm)

1 8 28 20

2 9 30 21

3 9 32 23

4 8 31 23

5 8 48 40

Claim (What are the results of your experiment?):

Evidence (What data did you collect that supports your claim? Explain the meaning behind the
data and the calculations.):

Post-Lab Questions

1. What affect did the different sweeteners have on the rate of fermentation in the yeast? The
sweeteners that did not have as much sugar in them were unable to provide high
rates of energy, causing it to not be as concentrated or rise higher.

2. What metabolic by product were you measuring in this experiment?
