Since 2008 in Russia, all pupils must take the Unified State Examination
at the end of their secondary education. Russian language and
mathematics are compulsory, but other subjects are optional,
including sciences and foreign languages.
Young people have to pass the exam to enrol at a university, and
it can be a difficult experience.
Although this exam is considered to be less open to corruption than
the old system, some universities have again begun to introduce
independent entrance exams. The government now wants experts to
create a new system of exams that combines traditional Soviet methods
with more modern ideas.
