,Henry VII: Consolidation of power.
 Richard III’s Usurpation of power and subsequent rule was unpopular with many.
 Henry VII wins Bosworth 22nd August 1485- weak position, weak claim and rivals!
Claim through John of Gaunt- only Lancastrian claimant but victory that sealed his
claim. Abroad since 14.
 Lord Stanley proclaimed him king on battlefield. Buried Richard in Leicester then 3 rd
Sept met Lord Mayor of London- public accepted him- Richard had become
unpopular- princes etc…

Henry VII’s Character and aims:
 Not trained to rule- fled to France at 14 after Yorkist Edward IV regained power at
Tewkesbury- lots of Lancastrians were killed or executed. THOMAS PENN Said
Henry’s ability to think like a fugitive was useful political training for role as ruler.
 1485- Henry’s main aim was keeping the throne. 4 kings from last 100yrs had been
killed. Consolidation main aim.
 Reign 21 August- pre-Bosworth- all Yorkist fighters could be traitors.
 Public reward of supporters- 11 knighthoods.
 Detained Ed IVth’s daughter Elizabeth of York and Nephew Earl of Warwick (held in
tower and later executed for Warbeck plot 1499)
 Household- supporters Sir Reginald Bray Chancellor of Duchy of Lancaster; Sir
William Stanley Lord Chamberlain- later accused of treason.
 Coronation 30th Oct before Parliament 7 Nov- showed hereditary right not just
sanction of parliament.
 Parliamentary Acts of Attainder Vs those who fought with York at Bosworth-
Parliament granted tonnage and poundage taxes.
 Married Elizabeth of York- after other consolidations- showed kingship in own right-
not just because of her.
 Propaganda combination of roses- ‘Tudor Rose’ and houses.

Establishing and securing the Tudor dynasty:
 1489- Arthur born.
 But Henry’s position weak- earls of Warwick and Lincoln (Edward IVth’s nephews) +
pretenders (princes).

,  Margaret of Burgundy- sister of Edward IV and Richard III- anti Tudor dowager
Duchess of Burgundy- funds to agitate.
 Viscount Lovell and the Stafford’s 1486
 Easter 1486 Lovell- North Riding of Yorkshire- Stafford- midlands- half-hearted and
easily stopped- Lovell escaped, Stafford executed, younger brother Thomas
pardoned.
 Lambert Simnel Lincoln rebellion.
 Yorkists change tack- need a figurehead and finance.
 Simnel pretended to be Warwick- crowned as King Edward in Ireland. King paraded
real Warwick. Lincoln -who had set this up- fled court to Burgundy, met Lovell and
got Margaret of Burgundy to pay for mercenaries to support.
 Risked leaving Northumberland in charge of North- neutralised Yorkist Howard
family who he was part of.
 Reenforced E Anglian defences but landed in Cumberland (NW) went to N Riding to
get support- reluctance.
 Battle of Stoke Field 1487
 Army led by Earl of Oxford; Lincoln killed in battle- Henry had been concerned but
was successful.
 Significant- position much stronger.
 Lenient with rebels- uses bonds of good behaviour.
 Perkin Warbeck imposture.
 Cloth trader from Tournai 1491 impersonated Richard Duke of York (2nd ‘prince in the
tower’). Appearance in Charles VIII of France’s court 1491. Had to flee to Margaret
of Burgundy- trained as a Yorkist prince.
 1495 landed in England but Henry aware and defeated-fled to James IV of Scotland.
 Some chance of success- Sir William Stanley (H step Uncle)- Lord Chamberlain but
involved in the plot. Christine Carpenter -Henry at his most vulnerable in a place
where he should have been most secure.
 1496 Scottish force invaded on Warbeck’s behalf, but James accepted Henry’s offer
of marriage to his daughter Margaret.
 1497- Warbeck supported Cornish rebellion 1497- surrendered- H lenient- held him
in the tower but tried to escape- with Earl of Warwick – both executed.
 de la Poles – Edmund (Suffolk) and Richard- brothers of Lincoln.
