KEY WORDS
CONFORMITY- form of social influence that results from exposure to
the majority opinions, leading to compliance with that majority.
Tendency for people to adopt the behaviour/attitudes/values of other
members of a group.
TYPES OF CONFORMITY-
COMPLIANCE- when an individual accepts influence because they hope
to achieve a favourable reaction from people around them.
Attitude/behaviours are adopted because of rewards/approval, not the
contents.
IDENTIFICATION- form of influence where an individual adopts tan
attitude/behaviour because they want to be associated with that
group.
INTERNALISATION- when an individual accepts influence because the
content of the attitude/behaviour proposed is consistent with their
own value system.
EXPLANATIONS TO CONFORMITY-
INFORMATIONAL SOCIAL INFLUENCE (ISI)- form of influence that is
resulted from the desire to be right/factually correct- looking to others
as a way to gain evidence about reality.
NORMATIVE SOCIAL INFLUENCE (NSI)- form of influence where an
individual confronts with the expectations of the majority in order to
gain approval, or to avoid social disapproval.
