California Geology Quiz 1
Aesthenosphere - layer of softer, weaker rock underneath Earth's lithosphere that can go
with the flow slowly
Andesite/diorite - Both intermediate varieties of rock in between the mafic and felsic scale;
andesite being volcanic and diorite being plutonic
Basalt/gabbro - Both malfic rocks but Basalt being volcanic whilst gabbro being plutonic
cleavage - A mineral's ability to cut up easily along flat surfaces.
Coarse-grained - Grains that are visible, large and smooth to identify
Convection - Process via which, in a fluid being heated, the hotter a part of the mass will
upward push and the cooler portions will sink.
Convergent plate boundaries - A tectonic plate boundary in which two plates collide, come
collectively, or crash into every other.
Crust/Mantle/Core - Crust is split between oceanic crust and continental crust; mantle
composes of the upper and decrease mantle, all which might be strong; the middle is
composed of the outer and inner middle, the outer core is liquid iron-nickel alloy, the internal
center is stable regardless of being hotter than the outer core
Divergent plate obstacles - Boundary between tectonic plates in which the 2 plates circulate
faraway from each other, and new crust is created among them
Example of native factors - bronze, silver, gold
Extrusive - pleasant-grained igneous rock that paperwork whilst magma cools quickly at or
near Earth's floor
Felsic - Describes magma or igneous rock that is rich in feldspars and silica and that is
normally mild in colour.
Quality-grained - The texture of igneous rocks that shape hastily at the surface. Crystals are
for that reason too small to be seen.
Fracture - The way a mineral looks whilst it breaks apart in an irregular manner
Hot spots - areas of volcanic sports that result from plumes of hot solid material that have
risen from deep inner earths mantle
Igneous - A kind of rock that forms from the cooling of molten rock at or underneath the floor.
