Preface
You and we know that statistics is important - even crucial - to successful management strategy
and implementation. One of the keys to successful teaching to business students is to find a way
to be sure that they realize this too. Real-world examples are useful. Once they see that statistics
will help their careers, providing a competitive advantage, many of your problems will be over.
Andrew is grateful to the head of his department for this helpful advice, given as he prepared to
teach his first business statistics course.

To help you save time in preparing lectures and assignments, this Instructor’s Manual provides
the following, chapter-by-chapter:

A brief discussion of Teaching Objectives, including some ideas on how to motivate
students.

The Question Answers.

The Problem Solutions.

The Database Exercise Solutions.

The Case Discussion Material.

For use with Microsoft Excel and other software that can read Excel files, each chapter of
Practical Business Statistics has its own file on the companion website that includes the data
tables from examples and problems. To access it, use File/Open from Excel’s menu. Each
column of numbers is named as an Excel Range, and is ready to use.

To work with a column of numbers from a data file, you may use its name in a formula, such
as “=AVERAGE(yield)” to place the average of a column of numbers named “yield” into a cell
in your worksheet. Alternatively, you may drag the mouse down the numbers in the data set to
select them if you wish.

Chapter 19 “Statistical (Machine) Learning” is an exception in that the chapter data sets are
provided on the companion website as individual comma separated value (csv) files, rather than
providing all data sets in a single Excel file. This facilitates the use of data in the statistical
programming language R, technology that we adopt in Chapter 19, as well as other more
advanced software packages (e.g., Python).
