Assess muscle strength of shoulders (CN 11), upper arms, and hand grip - technique
Give this one a try later!
, Shoulders:
-put hands on pt shoulders and have them shrug
As pt to shrug shoulders while you attempt to push them down
Test for CN XI - Spinal accessory
Arms:
-push and pull
Assess deltoid strength:
Have pt hold arms up while you try to push them down - remember to
compare each side
Assess triceps strength:
Have pt try to flex the arm while you try to extend his or her forearm
hands:
-squeeze fingers
Have pt grip your first two fingers on each hand
Response should be bilaterally equal
Grip is tight and full flexion
Inspect anterior thorax for anteroposterior to lateral diameter (AP:L) - findings
Give this one a try later!
the anteroposterior to the lateral diameter ratio is 1:2
Observe respirations on anterior chest for rhythm, depth, and effort - findings
Give this one a try later!
, the
Rhythm is even
Depth is normal
Effort is quiet and effortless
Assess for presence of edema - techniques
Give this one a try later!
Press into ankle area and release
Inspect nasal turbinate's and meatus for color - techniques
Give this one a try later!
Look at NOSE and hole
Inspect the buccal mucosa, palate, uvula, posterior pharynx, and tonsils for texture,
color, surface characteristics, odor, and movement (CN10) - techniques
Give this one a try later!
Use pen light
With Gloved hand instruct pt to tilth head back so the palate and uvula can
be inspected
Instruct pt to say ahh (CN X - Vagus nerve)
Observe the soft palate rise symmetrically with the uvula remaining in the
, midline position (CN IX - Glossopharyngeal nerve)
Use tongue depressor to hold the tongue down
Examine the posterior wall of the pharynx
Inspect the tongue for movement (CN 12), symmetry, color, and surface
characteristics - techniques
Give this one a try later!
Ask pt to stick tongue out
Inspect the neck for position in relation to head - Findings
Give this one a try later!
neck is centered and upright
Auscultate for S3 or S4 (gallops) or murmurs and note pitch, quality, intensity, timing,
duration, and location - findings
Give this one a try later!
No gallops or murmurs present
