L ANGUAGES AND DIALECTS
A language is a dialect with an army and a navy
The difference usually is political. A neutral term that can be used
to refer equally to languages and dialects is “Language variety
D IALECT:
• non standardized, low status or rural form of languag
• Dialect is also used to describe languages that don’t have a
written form
L ANGUAGE
- It varies in time (ex: regional dialects) and (social) space (ex:
where you are in social hierarchic)
I SOGLOSSES
A map to determine different features
Regional dialects can be mapped thanks to isoglosses. An isogloss
is a line on a map that shows the geographical distribution of a
linguistic feature. A dialect area is found when there’s an overlap
of isoglosses (multiple linguistic features change all at once)
If there’s a knot people start to not understand each other
